Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie Ingredients
- Bread flour
- Butter
- Large egg
- Light brown sugar
- Granulated sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Baking soda
- Salt
- Semi-sweet chocolate chips
Note: The extra gluten in the bread flour gives the dough more structure so the cookies will be chewier and hold their shape more. If you don’t have bread flour, substitute an equal amount of all-purpose flour.
How to Make Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies
Step 1
Preheat the oven to 375° F.

Stir flour, baking soda, and salt together in a small bowl until evenly mixed.
Step 3
Add butter, egg, granulated sugar, light brown sugar, and vanilla to the bowl of a stand mixer or a large mixing bowl, and beat the ingredients until they are combined.
The dough will turn out just as great whether you use a stand mixer, a hand mixer, or mix by hand. Mixing this dough by hand is very easy if the butter is at room temperature. Do not use melted butter for the best chewy texture.
Step 4
Add the flour, baking soda, and salt mixture to the mixer or mixing bowl, and beat together on low until a uniform dough forms.
Step 5
Stir in the chocolate chips. We love to use semi-sweet chocolate chips, but milk chocolate chips taste great, too!
For another variation, try using butterscotch chips or peanut butter chips.
Step 6
Chill the dough covered in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes for chewy cookies that will hold their shape. If you prefer flatter cookies, skip this step.
Step 7
Form the dough into 12 roughly shaped balls. Do not roll them smooth.
Step 8
Bake the dough on a flat sheet tray for 11-13 minutes or until cookies are golden brown. For best results, line the sheet tray with parchment paper, and do not grease.
If the cookies are baked on a rimmed tray, the bottoms will brown before the cookies are finished baking.
For the chewiest cookies, remove from the oven as soon as the center is firm. The cookies will be crispier if they bake longer.
Step 9
Remove the cookies from the pan immediately, and let them cool on a wire rack. The bottoms of the cookies will continue to brown if they are left on the hot pan.
